The First Crossword Puzzle

Difficulty: * * * (explanation of difficulty)

This is the world's first crossword puzzle (originally called a "word-cross puzzle"). It was created by Arthur Wynne (1862–1945) and appeared in the New York World on December 21, 1913.

Note: The numbering conventions in this puzzle are different from those of modern crossword puzzles. Each clue specifies two numbers; the first is the starting box and the second is the ending box. Some other conventions of modern crosswords are not followed; select the "Show Hint" button for more information.

Instructions: Fill in each white-coloured box with a single letter, corresponding to the letters in each answer. When finished, click the "Check solution" button to check your solution.
